What is a GSTIN Validator?

A GSTIN validator checks whether a Goods and Services Tax Identification Number follows the expected 15-character structure. It decodes the state code, embedded PAN, entity type from the 4th character of the PAN, registration sequence, reserved character, and checksum — so you can catch typing errors before they hit invoices, masters, or returns.

How to use this validator

1

Enter or paste a GSTIN

Spaces and hyphens are cleaned up and letters are uppercased automatically.

2

Review structure checks

See state code, PAN, sequence, reserved Z, and checksum segments update as you type.

3

Get live taxpayer details

When the format is valid, we fetch legal name, status, address, and more from the registry lookup.

GSTIN format at a glance

Every standard GSTIN is exactly 15 characters. Understanding each segment helps you spot entry mistakes faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSTIN structure, checksum, privacy, and how this differs from official portal verification.

A GSTIN is a 15-character Goods and Services Tax Identification Number assigned to GST-registered persons in India. It encodes the state code, PAN, registration sequence, a reserved character (Z), and a checksum.
Structure validation only confirms the 15-character pattern and checksum. When format passes, this tool also attempts a live taxpayer lookup (legal name, status, address, and more). Always reconfirm critical status on the official GST portal.
After structure validation succeeds, we look up taxpayer details via a GST validation service. Results can lag or fail; use the official GST portal for final compliance decisions.
The 15th character is a base-36 check digit computed from the first 14 characters. It helps catch typing errors such as swapped digits or wrong letters.
Positions 3–12 embed the taxpayer’s Permanent Account Number. Entity type is derived from the 4th character of that PAN (GSTIN position 6) — for example P = Individual / Proprietorship, C = Private or Public Company, F = Partnership Firm, L = Limited Liability Partnership.
They are the GST jurisdiction (state or Union Territory) code — for example, 27 for Maharashtra and 24 for Gujarat. Unrecognized codes fail structural validation.
In the standard GSTIN pattern used for most taxpayers, the 14th character is reserved and set to Z. Other values fail Phase 1 structural checks.
Yes. It is free to use with no signup. Validation runs in your browser and values are not uploaded to T7 servers by default.
No. Phase 1 validation is local. We do not save entered GSTINs to an account or send them for registry lookup in this release.
Use the official GST taxpayer search on the GST portal. That service can confirm legal name, status, and other registered details after CAPTCHA or portal authentication as required.
Yes. Use “Try an example” on the validator to load a documented sample and explore the decoded segments.
Yes. The validator is designed for phones and tablets with the same structure checks and diagnostics as desktop.
Common issues include wrong length, invalid characters, unrecognized state codes, malformed PAN segments, a non-Z reserved character, and checksum mismatches — including O/0 and I/1 style typing mistakes that break the check digit.
